The Cutie Map by Darkclaw-Whitedragon

Well with a new season upon us I thought that I could take the chance to challenge myself a bit. My challenge to myself: To before next episode has aired try to have written and uploaded my thoughts of the latest episode.

Nothing too fancy just my thoughts in a reasonable ordered way in an attempt to make it a habit to make content on a more regular basis and practice my writing skills a little.

Will contain spoilers, will not be in depth with every plot point or description of characters. Not much to gain from reading this if you have not seen the episode/s covered or is not versed in the overall world of Mlp Fim.

Disclaimer: I first saw the episodes for my self and planned to write this before I saw/read what other people had to say about it but I could not stop myself from watching Silver Quill's and Dr Wolf's first impression video about them.

This means that I might have been slightly influenced by what they had to say and might touch upon a few points they brought my attention to, but honestly quite a few things they brought up overlapped with my first impression of the episodes from the get go. I think some things just are in line with what a lot of people in the fandom might have thought about the premiere. If you have not seen their video yet then you can find it here: youtu.be/6Er5evUrkho

Hello everyone! Is a little late with this because of university but let’s get on with it shall we? Maybe it is because it have been so long since we had a new episode or just because it comes quite natural to size it up to the finale of season four but over all so did the premiere feel… well, not as grand as one might expect and I'll get back to why I think that is a good thing!

I did not come in to these episodes spoiler free so I knew the overall premise of it but even if I have seen it done before so did DHX get it right. Really right.

Well first so have we the initial set-up with reestablishing characters and their status  from the previous season which is done in a quite effective way and reasonable fashion.  Spike is left out again but has a reasonable explanation for it and it is a logical decision from the staff for this particular story.

After the mane six have arrived to the village the map marked out for them is where - where there have been at least a bit of a horror element to it. Not the “jump scare “or “terror” but like I was being watched. Something right over my shoulder just out of sight and quiet…The eerie and bit uncanny kind of horror that lingers.

It is a show mostly aimed to a younger audience but it still manage to give those vibes even if it is in a quiet subdued kind of way.

Then we have the song of the premiere. Dr wolf made the comment that the song reminded him of “This is Halloween” and I can see why.Like “This is Halloween” so does this song set the episodes tone.

It cemented that eerie kind of pressure and weariness I felt and it was during this song I felt the most. Not choking level but like it had its “hands” just of my throat moments before it would take a real hold and apply pressure.

It eases up again afterward but it does not disappear either, remaining an undertone of the rest of the premiere even during other more bright parts of it, just out of sight. Even though it is an upbeat song so is it the underlying themes of it that gets to me.

Well, I also should mention the portrayals of the mane six and the writers are of to a good start. Pinkie Pie is back into her groove after some dicey times in season 4 providing quality humor, Fluttershy acts a bit naive at first but it has a nice pay-off in the second half and Twilight keeps a level head when it matters. Rainbow Dash, Applejack and Rarity shows of their distinct personalities without them getting flanderised.

The flow of the episodes is in some ways predictable but trust DHX to give us some nice variety. Oh was I suprised how they kicked of Fluttershys retrieval mission. Also so was it refreshing that other ponies than the mane six got the chance to make a real contribution to the resolution of the conflict.

Summing things up so did this still feel more of an appetizer than a full course meal. An appetizer that leaves me eagerly awaiting what to come!

Not being grandois is not a synonym to not being well crafted which is my overall impression of the season premiere. It doesn't outshine its predecessors but in its purpose does more than well stand up to par with them.

With the set-up with the map so have we a chance to a season with new locations the mane six visits and, as Silver Quill and Dr Wolf took up in their video, not necessarily always together.

With Starlight Glimmer unaccounted for so have we the chance to an recurring villain or the build up for an interesting season finale.

This in conclusion is, if I may dare to be optimistic, the start of a season full of possibilities. Now I’m of to seeing what everyone else had to say about the episodes and then find somewhere to see the new episode.

So until next time allow yourself a moment of peace and I hope you will have a good time.
